Challenges for Cardinals Offensive Line Highlighted by Hjalte Froholdt's Journey

The Arizona Cardinals' offensive line has faced significant challenges throughout the 2023 season, particularly at the guard positions. Will Hernandez, a key player, has returned to injured reserve, complicating the situation further.

However, center Hjalte Froholdt, now age 29, has emerged as a stabilizing force. Since joining the Cardinals in 2023, Froholdt has demonstrated versatility and performance, currently ranked among the top five centers in the league with a Pro Football Focus rating of 70.8, especially excelling in pass blocking.

His journey to the NFL began in Denmark, where he initially played rugby before transitioning to American football at age 12. After moving to the United States as an exchange student, he played high school football in Warren, Ohio, and later attended the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, before committing to the University of Arkansas.

There, Froholdt started as a defensive lineman, transitioned to offensive guard, and eventually played center during his senior year. Selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Froholdt's early career included challenges such as injuries and roster changes, with stints at both the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns.

After a tumultuous time in Cleveland, where he played various roles without securing a starting position, he signed a two-year deal with the Cardinals in 2023 looking for stability. His impressive training camp performance led to being named the Week 1 starter, and he has since started every game this season.

In 2024, he continued this streak and has been pivotal in providing consistency on the line. In a commitment to his role, the Cardinals extended Froholdt's contract in 2024 for two years at $12 million, including $8 million guaranteed and various bonuses, ensuring that the center position is solidified through at least the 2026 season.

While the overall offensive line still faces challenges, Froholdt's presence has been a bright spot, contributing to the team's performance amid ongoing adjustments.
