Stephen Curry, the star guard of the Golden State Warriors, is expected to miss approximately one week due to a quad contusion, according to sources reported by ESPN's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater.
The injury was confirmed by an MRI after Curry left the game against the Houston Rockets late in the fourth quarter during a 104-100 home loss on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr expressed relief that the injury was only to Curry's quad, stating, 'When I heard it was a quad, I was actually relieved.
Better than an ankle or a knee.' Curry sustained the injury while attempting to take a charge against Rockets guard Amen Thompson with 3:24 left in the game. He was elbowed and subsequently called for a blocking foul after a review.
On the next possession, Curry drove into the lane for a layup attempt but was then called for a charge, a ruling that Kerr challenged but was not overturned. After the charge call, Curry continued to move gingerly on the court and was clearly in pain.
During a timeout with just 35.2 seconds remaining on the clock and the Warriors trailing by five points, Curry consulted with Rick Celebrini, the team's lead medical decision-maker, who then indicated to the bench that Curry would not return for the game.
This injury comes at a challenging time for the Warriors, as they now hold a record of 10-10 after starting the season 4-1. Following the game, both Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green criticized the Warriors' recent defensive performance, underscoring the urgency of the situation as the team prepares to face the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday, December 2, and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, December 5.
The Warriors will need to adjust their strategy and performance while Curry is sidelined, as his impact on the game is significant and his absence could be crucial in this competitive stretch of their schedule.
