Richie Adubato, Veteran NBA Coach, Passes Away at 87

Richie Adubato, a veteran coach who left a significant mark on both the NBA and WNBA, passed away at the age of 87, as confirmed by his family. Adubato was a beloved figure in basketball, remembered for his humor, warmth, and the lasting impact he had on players and teams.

He became a staple of New York basketball through his tenure with the New York Liberty from 1999 to 2004, leading the franchise to three WNBA Finals appearances. He still holds the record for the most games coached in Liberty history and ranks second in all-time wins with the team, showcasing his deep connection to the organization.

Adubato coached future Hall of Famers, including Teresa Weatherspoon and Becky Hammon, and his legacy continues to inspire the Liberty. The franchise expressed their gratitude for his contributions, stating that he set a standard of excellence that is still felt today.

Adubato's NBA career included interim head coaching roles with the Detroit Pistons during the 1979-80 season and the Orlando Magic in 1997, as well as a four-year stint as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks from 1989 to 1993.

After his coaching career, he transitioned to the radio booth with the Orlando Magic, serving as a dedicated analyst from 2005 to 2020. The DeVos family and the Orlando Magic expressed their sadness at his passing, highlighting how he turned the gym into a place of joy and connection.

He graduated from William Paterson University, where he captained both the basketball and baseball teams, illustrating his passion for sports from a young age.
