NBA Europe managing director George Aivagolozu announced that the NBA is targeting October twenty twenty-seven for the launch of a new Europe-based league, as reported by The Guardian US. This league is expected to feature a sixteen-team model, with plans for twelve permanent franchises.
Aivagolozu shared these insights during a conference in Milan, describing the initial season as a semi-opening, indicating that not all slots in the league may be filled at launch. Countries being considered for franchise locations include Britain, with potential cities like London and Manchester; France, with Paris and Lyon; Spain, with Madrid and Barcelona; Italy, with Rome and Milan; Germany, with Munich and Berlin; Greece, with Athens; and Turkey, with Istanbul.
However, no formal agreements with any cities or clubs have been established yet. The structure of the league is intriguing, as the remaining four teams could qualify through performance in domestic leagues or by winning FIBA's Basketball Champions League.
Aivagolozu noted that this qualification aspect could revitalize European domestic leagues, which have changed significantly over the past few decades. The NBA has plans to send the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies for games in Berlin and London in January, indicating a commitment to engage European fans.
Discussions are ongoing with potential investors and stakeholders to shape the future of this league, with Aivagolozu stating, 'We're well underway in our approach and engagement with the market.' He also hinted at the possibility of creating a new tournament that could see matchups between NBA teams and European clubs, drawing parallels to FIFA's Club World Cup.
The NBA and FIBA have been working on this initiative since March, marking a significant step in expanding basketball's global reach. Financial and strategic advice is being provided by JPMorgan Chase and Raine Group as part of this process.
Prominent European clubs, including Real Madrid, Fenerbahce, and Barcelona, are expected to be involved, alongside top soccer brands such as Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. The growing presence of European players in the NBA, such as Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, and Victor Wembanyama, highlights the importance of this initiative for both leagues and their international fanbases.
