Tigers Sign Kenley Jansen: Closer Role Uncertain

The Detroit Tigers have signed veteran closer Kenley Jansen to a one-year, $11 million contract that includes a club option for the following season. General manager Scott Harris stated that it will be up to manager A.J.
Hinch to decide whether Jansen will take on the closer role for the team. Jansen, who is fourth on the career saves list with 476, joins a Tigers bullpen that has operated without a designated closer under Hinch.
Last season, Jansen recorded a 2.59 ERA with 29 saves in 30 chances while playing for the Los Angeles Angels. The 38-year-old right-hander has been a four-time All-Star and was the National League Reliever of the Year in 2016 and 2017.
Jansen has made 933 appearances, leading all active players, and has helped teams reach the postseason 10 times. The Tigers are looking to improve their chances of returning to the playoffs after finishing one game behind the AL Central champion Cleveland Guardians last season.
Along with Jansen, the Tigers have also signed right-handers Kyle Finnegan to a two-year deal worth $19 million and Drew Anderson for a one-year contract worth $7 million. However, they have yet to make significant moves to bolster their offensive lineup.
Harris emphasized that returning players are expected to develop during the offseason as the team aims to win.
