Rockies Introduce New President of Baseball Operations Paul DePodesta

The Colorado Rockies have officially named Paul DePodesta as their new president of baseball operations. This announcement was made during a press conference where owner Dick Monfort and executive vice president Walker Monfort participated.

Dick Monfort indicated he plans to reduce his involvement in baseball operations, citing increased responsibilities with labor negotiations in the upcoming year, particularly with the collective bargaining agreement set to expire soon.

He expressed a desire to allocate more time to those negotiations, stating, 'I have a lot more responsibility with the league over the next year, so I have to allocate time there.' With this shift, Walker Monfort, who has been with the team for over 15 years, has been promoted to executive vice president and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the club, including the hiring of DePodesta's successors, such as a general manager and a new manager.

Notably, DePodesta has taken charge of a franchise that has struggled significantly, finishing the last season with a dismal 119 losses, which places them among the least successful teams in MLB history.

The Rockies' pitching staff has been particularly underwhelming, allowing nearly six earned runs per nine innings, prompting DePodesta to explore possible trades to strengthen the rotation. At the recent GM Meetings, he suggested he might consider trading offensive assets to bolster pitching, emphasizing the need for a broader understanding of what other teams view as valuable within the Rockies' roster.

He noted, 'If we need to shift assets around to bolster another area, then we'll have to do that.' As the Rockies search for a general manager to join DePodesta, reports indicate that they would like to finalize this hire before the Winter Meetings next month.

The team previously explored a list of about 30 candidates for the position before narrowing it down. The front office's ongoing restructuring highlights a commitment to revitalizing the franchise and improving its competitive standing in the league.
