Mets Seek Rotation Overhaul with Framber Valdez Rumors
Full Transcript
The New York Mets are reportedly seeking a significant overhaul of their starting rotation as they look to rebound from a disappointing 2025 season. Among the names linked to the Mets is former Houston Astros ace and free agent Framber Valdez.
According to MLB insider Hector Gomez, the Mets are attempting to finalize a six-year, $200 million deal for Valdez, who had a tough season with a record of 13 wins and 11 losses and a 3.66 ERA. However, his previous four seasons showcased a stellar 3.08 ERA and a 1.153 WHIP, making him a more reliable option as a number two starter behind Nolan McLean.
This pursuit of Valdez may seem logical, but there are complicating factors at play. Gomez has a mixed track record with his reporting, including an incorrect story last winter about a trade for Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia.
Additionally, the Mets' president of baseball operations David Stearns had previously indicated no interest in Valdez during the MLB GM meetings earlier in November, casting doubt on the legitimacy of Gomez's report.
Valdez has a reputation for being temperamental, highlighted by an incident where he intentionally threw his catcher off base after giving up a home run. This raises concerns for a Mets clubhouse that has already faced tension, including a recent altercation between Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil, as well as conflicts involving generational outfielder Juan Soto.
Bringing in Valdez could exacerbate these issues. Furthermore, committing over $200 million to Valdez presents a financial challenge for the Mets, especially with other priorities emerging. After trading Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien, the Mets are now in search of a top-tier outfielder, potentially targeting players like Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker.
They also need to consider re-signing franchise home run king Pete Alonso and star closer Edwin Diaz, which means they will have to allocate their financial resources wisely. The trade market may offer the Mets a better avenue, with potential targets like Detroit Tigers' two-time defending AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal and Miami Marlins' Sandy Alcantara.
