Marlins Sign Christopher Morel to Strengthen Roster

The Miami Marlins have signed infielder/outfielder Christopher Morel to a one-year major league deal worth two million dollars, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. This signing, confirmed by Mike Rodriguez, will fill an open roster spot for the Marlins, with Morel expected to primarily play first base, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Morel, who is 26 years old, has shown power potential, hitting 16 home runs in 2022 and 26 in 2023, but has struggled with a high strikeout rate, striking out 32.2% in 2022 and 31% in 2023. His defensive abilities have also been inconsistent, having been graded poorly at shortstop, third base, and the outfield, while being more acceptable at second base.
After being non-tendered by the Tampa Bay Rays, Morel enters the 2025-26 offseason as a low-risk signing for the Marlins, who are seeking to upgrade their first base position after using seven different players there in the previous season.
Although Morel's power is appealing, his high strikeout rate raises concerns about his ability to establish himself as a regular player. The Marlins are reportedly looking to enhance their lineup further, but indications suggest a modest payroll increase, with prior offseason spending being limited under president of baseball operations Peter Bendix.
This signing marks the Marlins' first free agent deal of the 2025-26 offseason, and while it addresses a need, it may not meet the expectations of fans hoping for a more impactful acquisition.
