Blue Jays Release Easton Lucas; Future Moves Anticipated

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed left-hander Easton Lucas on unconditional release waivers, dropping their 40-man roster count to 37, as announced on Tuesday. Sources, including Ben Nicholson-Smith from Sportsnet, report that Lucas is expected to sign with a foreign team after he clears waivers, likely in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball or in the Korea Baseball Organization.

The 29-year-old Lucas had a brief stint with the Blue Jays this season, appearing in six games, with five of those being starts. He gained popularity in April, achieving 10 and 1/3 shutout innings in his first two starts, including a notable performance at Fenway Park where he outperformed Garrett Crochet, who was a Cy Young runner-up.

However, Lucas's initial success quickly faded as he allowed eight runs in his next start, leading to a total of 18 earned runs over 14 innings pitched for the season. This year marked Lucas's third season in Major League Baseball, where he recorded 24 and 1/3 innings, resulting in a career-high but disappointing 8.02 earned run average.

His strikeout rate stood at a below-average 19.6%, coupled with a concerning 12.3% walk rate during his time in the majors. In contrast, his performance in Triple-A has been significantly better; over three seasons, he logged 162 and 2/3 innings with a solid 3.60 ERA, striking out 24.4% of batters faced while maintaining a 10% walk rate.

Lucas's fastball sat in the 93-95 mph range and he utilized a four-pitch arsenal, including a changeup, slider, and a less frequently used cutter. The Blue Jays' decision to release Lucas could indicate a shift in their roster strategy, as they may be looking to create space for new talent, prompting speculation of further roster changes and potential international signings.
