Cooper Flagg made headlines with his remarkable performance against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night, scoring 35 points in a 114-100 victory. At just 18 years and 343 days old, Flagg became the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 35-point milestone, surpassing LeBron James by five days.

Flagg's shooting efficiency was also notable, hitting 13 out of 22 attempts from the floor, which translates to a shooting percentage of 59.1%. He also contributed eight rebounds and two assists in the game.

Flagg's scoring explosion included a dominant first half, during which he scored 21 points, taking advantage of the Clippers' lackluster defense, particularly from James Harden. The Clippers, currently ranked 26th in defensive efficiency, have now lost four consecutive games.

Flagg's aggressive play was evident as he consistently attacked the rim, including a critical pull-up jumper with under two minutes remaining that helped secure the Mavericks' lead. He was also effective in closing out the game, earning free throws after driving against Ivica Zubac and converting both attempts.

This game marked what many are calling Flagg's first signature win, positioning him as a serious contender for the NBA Rookie of the Year award. According to CBS Sports, Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel has been leading the race, averaging 18.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and three assists per game.

However, Flagg's recent production has eclipsed Knueppel's, averaging over 20 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists over his last five games. This shift in performance coincided with the Mavericks' decision to bench D'Angelo Russell in favor of Brandon Williams and Ryan Nembhard as their point guard duo, creating better floor spacing for Flagg.

Although Flagg's three-point shooting remains a work in progress at 11.8% during this stretch, he has focused on scoring inside the arc, where he has found more success. While the sample size is small, the potential return of Anthony Davis to the Mavericks roster poses an interesting challenge for Flagg's ongoing development.

If he continues this level of play, he could indeed challenge for the Rookie of the Year against Knueppel, especially as Knueppel's production may decrease with the return of healthy teammates. Both players are former Duke teammates, making this rivalry even more compelling as the season progresses.

Flagg, who struggled at the start of the season, is now climbing the ranks in the Rookie of the Year conversation, showcasing the talent that made him the number one overall pick.
