Lincoln Coach Neil Alexander Approaches All-Time Wins Record
Full Transcript
Lincoln coach Neil Alexander is in his 49th season and is closing in on 1,000 career wins, currently boasting a record of 982 wins and 440 losses. With the Lincoln Railsplitters off to a 4-1 start in the 2025-26 season, Alexander is just 18 wins shy of the milestone and 54 wins from surpassing the late Gene Pingatore, who holds the all-time record with 1,035 wins at St.
Joseph. Despite the impending landmark, Alexander remains focused on the team's performance rather than personal accolades, stating, "It's a number. I'm not looking at it one way or another." Alexander's impact extends beyond wins; he has won 20 or more games in 25 seasons, capturing 19 regional championships and five sectional titles, and has taken four teams to the State Finals, including a second-place finish in 2014.
His assistant coach, Eric Ewald, who has been with Alexander for 28 years, expressed pride in being part of the coach’s legacy. Alexander's sons, Geoff and Gregg, both of whom played under him, also emphasize his deep passion for coaching and connection with players.
As the 71-year-old coach continues to impact young athletes, he expresses excitement about upcoming rule changes, including the shot clock, which will be fully implemented in the 2026-27 season. The Lincoln basketball community remains supportive, and Alexander's commitment to the program and its students underscores the importance of coaching in developing young talent.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, as Alexander approaches these significant milestones, he remains grounded, taking each day as it comes and focusing on the game he loves.
