Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley has been suspended after throwing a water bottle that struck a child during a game. The incident occurred after Malik Mack missed a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer, leading to Georgetown's 80-77 loss to Xavier on December 16, 2025.

Cooley's actions prompted Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed to announce that he will miss the Hoyas' next game against Coppin State. In a statement, Cooley expressed deep remorse, apologizing to the Nyahkoon family, whom he regards as his own family, and to the Georgetown community, team, fans, the league, and his own family, stating his conduct was unacceptable.

He emphasized he takes full responsibility and aims to learn from this experience. Lee Reed stated that Cooley's actions did not align with the standards expected of coaches and the values of Georgetown athletics.

The Big East Conference has also supported Georgetown's decision, highlighting that the safety and security of spectators and participants are paramount. Georgetown, currently with an 8-4 record, has lost four of its last seven games.

Jeff Battle, the associate head coach, will take over for Cooley in the upcoming game against Coppin State on December 18, 2025. Cooley is expected to return for the Hoyas' matchup against St. John's on New Year's Eve.
