NASA's James Webb Telescope Confirms Supermassive Black Hole Discovery
Full Transcript
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has confirmed the existence of a 'runaway' supermassive black hole, a groundbreaking discovery that has significant implications for our understanding of black holes and cosmic evolution.
According to Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University, the forces required to dislodge such a massive black hole from its home are enormous, and this is the first time a black hole has been found far from its former host.
Van Dokkum stated, 'This made it the best candidate for a runaway supermassive black hole, but what was missing was confirmation.' The discovery was reported in a pre-peer-reviewed paper available on arXiv, where it was noted that only a streak was previously observed, which was difficult to explain in any other way.
With the data from the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists have confirmed that there is indeed a black hole at the tip of the streak and that it is speeding away from its former host.
