On December 11, 2025, Newark's West Side High School unveiled the 403 Salon and Spa, an important addition to its cosmetology program. Superintendent Roger Leon and school board members joined students and staff for the grand opening.

The salon is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in a real salon environment, complete with styling stations, a hair washing area, and a private room for facials and waxing. Approximately 100 students are enrolled in the program, but only those with a permit can practice.

The salon will offer services to the public on Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m., including haircuts, coloring, and nail care. Nicole Daniels, the salon coordinator, emphasized that this program aims to give students valuable skills that could help them financially in the future.

Many students, like senior Jovonna Robinson and junior Dsyiah Ferdico, expressed excitement about their newfound confidence and career prospects in cosmetology. Robinson noted that she initially wanted to become a dentist but is now considering a career in cosmetology as well.

The program aligns with a broader trend, as interest in vocational training has surged among high school students, with many opting for alternative career paths instead of traditional four-year colleges, according to research from American Student Assistance.

The program allows students to complete the required 1,200 hours of instruction necessary for a cosmetology license by the time they graduate, setting them up for success in the beauty industry.
