Full Transcript
National Guard Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, who was shot in the head in Washington, DC, is now breathing on his own and can stand with assistance, according to MedStar Washington Hospital Center. This progress comes more than two weeks after the shooting incident near the Farragut West Metro station on November 26.
Dr. Jeffrey Mai, a neurosurgeon at the hospital, described Wolfe's recovery as extraordinary and stated that he is ready to transition from acute care to inpatient rehabilitation. Wolfe underwent lifesaving treatment, including emergency surgery to control bleeding and relieve pressure on his brain.
Tragically, fellow Guardsman Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20, succumbed to her injuries on Thanksgiving Day. Wolfe's parents, Melody and Jason Wolfe, expressed gratitude for the remarkable care their son received at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and acknowledged the support from the military community and across the nation.
The shooting suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including premeditated murder and assault with intent to kill. U.S. Attorney for Washington, DC, Jeanine Pirro stated that Lakanwal traveled across the country with the intent of attacking the National Guard members.
Wolfe's family remains hopeful for his continued recovery, attributing their optimism to the widespread prayers and support they have received.
