Local communities are embracing the spirit of giving this holiday season through the Light the World Giving Machines, which have raised an impressive fifty million dollars in donations since their launch in twenty seventeen.

These giant vending machine-style kiosks, introduced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, allow individuals to donate specific items or services to various charities. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, while some donation amounts may decline, most Americans still plan to contribute during the holidays.

The machines can be found in one hundred twenty-six cities across twenty-one countries and six continents, making charitable giving accessible and engaging. Users can select from a range of donations, such as a thirty-five dollar solar lamp for a refugee family or eighty-five dollars for malnutrition treatment for refugee children, supported by the UN Refugee Agency.

Instead of purchasing snacks, users can give back by selecting goods and services needed by those in need. The Church also ensures that operating costs are covered, meaning one hundred percent of donations go directly to the participating nonprofits.

Each donation is tracked, and organizations have twelve months to fulfill the orders. In twenty twenty-four, two million meals were provided, five hundred thousand children received vaccines, and one hundred twenty-five thousand refugees received emergency food boxes.

This year, over four thousand items are available for donation from more than five hundred local nonprofits, including major global organizations like the American Red Cross and UNICEF. The initiative inspires families to embrace the joy of giving, creating lasting lessons for children as they choose items to donate.

Locations for these Giving Machines span the globe, from North Pole, Alaska, to Tokyo, Japan. The impact is significant, building community and kindness while fostering a culture of generosity during the holidays.

As one participant noted, witnessing their children select items for others was a powerful lesson in love and sacrifice.
