In a heartwarming display of gratitude and community support, students from the Massapequa School District have come together to honor the sacrifices of veterans during their annual Veterans Day programs. At Lockhart Elementary School, Principal Michael DeLuca welcomed veterans from local organizations, including VFW Post 7763 and AmVets Post 88, to a breakfast before the ceremony. Students expressed their appreciation through applause, cheers, and performances of patriotic songs. Bill Colfer, a past commander of the VFW, reminded those in attendance that service to the country can take many forms, including the vital role of educators in shaping future generations. The event included speakers discussing the significance of Veterans Day, the playing of taps, and a march of honor where veterans were celebrated by students lining the hallways with cheers and handmade signs. Similarly, Fairfield Elementary School hosted its third annual Heroes Charge, inviting 55 veterans, representing all branches of the Armed Forces, to join students in a celebration filled with refreshments and creative activities. This initiative aimed to instill in students the importance of honoring veterans and recognizing their contributions to the country, as stated by teacher Doreen Walsh.
On another note, the Carle Place Educational Foundation hosted its successful Hicks Night fundraiser on October 29, which brought families and students together to support educational initiatives in the district. The event featured a concert and art show showcasing the talents of students from various schools, including Cherry Lane and Carle Place Middle/High School. Each performer received a pumpkin from Hicks Nurseries, and goodie bags were prepared by life skills students. The foundation aims to raise funds that are directly reinvested into the district through grants and loans supporting various programs. This annual event is significant for fostering community spirit and supporting educational achievements, highlighting the collective efforts of families, students, and staff in making a difference in their local schools. Through these inspiring acts of kindness and community recovery efforts, both events demonstrate the power of collective gratitude and support in uplifting local spirits and fostering resilience.
