Innovative Medical Advances Transform Stroke Rehabilitation
Full Transcript
Mark Foster, an Ontario resident, experienced a life-altering stroke after a fall from a 10-foot ladder while working at a construction site in Paris, Canada. Initially believing he was fine, a CT scan revealed extensive swelling in his brain and a pre-existing cavernoma.
Following a stroke triggered by increased blood pressure, Foster faced significant challenges, including slurred speech and difficulty with balance, prompting immediate brain surgery. Despite the setbacks, his recovery took a transformative turn with the use of the portable neuro-modulation stimulator, or PoNS device, developed by Helius Medical Technology.
This tongue-zapping device delivers a mild electrical current through the tongue to stimulate brain pathways, enhancing the effects of traditional rehabilitation therapies. Foster reported making more progress in just six months with the PoNS device than he had in the previous four years of conventional therapy, stating it greatly improved his confidence and mobility.
The PoNS device, originally designed for multiple sclerosis recovery, has undergone successful FDA Phase 3 clinical trials specifically for stroke rehabilitation. In these trials, over 100 patients showed significant improvements in balance and gait when using the device alongside their rehabilitation programs.
As of June 2023, CignaHealth became the fifth major payer to authorize claims for the PoNS device, which has a list price of $19,161, with in-network payments averaging around $18,350. The potential of the PoNS device for stroke recovery represents a significant advancement in medical technology, promising enhanced rehabilitation outcomes for many stroke survivors.
Foster's journey underlines the importance of innovative therapies in recovery from debilitating conditions and inspires hope for others facing similar challenges.
