Some San Francisco elementary school students at Commodore Sloat are making a difference by advocating for eco-friendly meal programs. They launched a letter writing campaign asking school administrators to reduce plastic waste.
In response, the school has adopted compostable lunch trays in partnership with Revolution Foods. Teacher Raphael Hitzke noted the significance of having 10- to 11-year-olds' voices heard, stating, 'They're our future.
They have brand new ideas. We need to listen to them.' The school also features an active gardening program, growing fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, strawberries, and leafy greens. Soon, they will use compost from the cafeteria to enhance their gardening efforts.
If this pilot program proves successful, it may expand to other schools.
