In Scotland, a couple named Andy and Sharon Longhurst have made headlines for their extraordinary commitment to wildlife conservation by rehabilitating over 500 hedgehogs in just under three years. Their initiative, known as Burntisland Hedgehog Haven, began in 2021 when they first took in hedgehogs after discovering one collapsed on a grass verge. Unable to find help from local animal services, they drove the hedgehog to a wildlife center, which sparked their journey into hedgehog rescue. They soon learned from Sandy Boyd, a veteran in the field, and quickly exceeded their initial capacity of caring for seven hedgehogs in their home. As the demand for hedgehog rescue grew, they converted their garage, previously a playroom for their children, into a rehabilitation ward. Their efforts culminated in the construction of a dedicated treatment ward in their garden, allowing them to care for up to 40 hedgehogs at any one time.

The Longhursts have faced numerous challenges in their work, rescuing hedgehogs from a variety of ailments, including injuries from vehicle strikes, infections, and even entanglements in soccer nets. They collaborate with local veterinarians for cases requiring advanced medical care, ensuring that these spiky creatures receive the attention they need. Their mission extends beyond rehabilitation; they actively educate the community on creating safe environments for hedgehogs, emphasizing the need for wildlife protection as hedgehogs have seen a significant decline in population, being classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List in 2024.

Community support has been crucial in their endeavors. Over the years, the couple has raised funds to expand their facilities and has enlisted 18 volunteers to assist with daily care tasks, from cleaning to monitoring the health of the hedgehogs. Their dedication has not gone unnoticed; they were recently awarded the Highly Commended recognition in the Animal Category at the BBC Make a Difference Awards and were featured as Heroes of the Week on Channel 5 News. In 2022, they received the Animal All Star award, acknowledging their remarkable contributions to animal welfare across the UK. The Longhursts' story is a powerful example of how individual efforts can lead to significant impacts in wildlife conservation, inspiring others to take action in their communities. As they continue their mission, they remain committed to helping every hedgehog that needs their care, demonstrating the profound connection between humans and wildlife.
