Community Acts of Kindness Shine in Holiday Season

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New York is donating over $60,000 to support holiday food distributions across the state, according to Brooklyn Paper. This initiative aims to help families during a time of rising grocery costs, funding more than 32 food distribution events in partnership with The Campaign Against Hunger and Food Bank for New York City.

The events will provide 200 bags of fresh produce and non-perishable foods at each location, totaling over 6,400 bags distributed throughout the holiday season. Dr. Melony Samuels, the founder and CEO of The Campaign Against Hunger, emphasized the importance of food equity, stating that access to nutritious foods during the holidays reinforces the belief that everyone deserves a fair chance at a healthy life.

Meanwhile, Portland Mercury reports on a significant labor victory for grocery workers at New Seasons, where a strike was averted after the New Seasons Labor Union secured their first labor contract. This agreement includes a $19-per-hour starting wage for new employees, which is the highest in the Portland area, alongside improvements in health insurance and scheduling.

The contract's ratification on December 4 highlights the solidarity among workers and their successful negotiation against a backdrop of challenging economic conditions.
