In a tragic mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, at least 15 people were killed, and more than 42 others were hospitalized. The attack, described as an antisemitic terror act, involved two gunmen, one of whom was killed, while the other, a 24-year-old man, remains in critical condition, according to New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon.

Amidst the chaos, 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, a fruit shop owner, emerged as a hero by bravely disarming one of the gunmen, risking his life in the process. Footage captured by bystanders shows al Ahmed tackling the shooter and wrestling the firearm away, leading to praise from officials, including New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, who stated, "There are many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery." Al Ahmed was shot twice during the incident and is currently hospitalized.

The mass shooting is the deadliest attack on Jews in the diaspora since the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue massacre and is the worst in Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996. Following the attack, there has been a surge in community support and solidarity, with figures such as Gal Gadot expressing their grief and calling for unity against antisemitism.

In Los Angeles, Jewish groups are ramping up Hanukkah festivities, urging communities not to be deterred by terror, as Rabbi Noah Farkas of the Jewish Federation emphasized the importance of gathering together to combat hate with light.

The Australian government has condemned the attack, labeling it a targeted assault on Jewish Australians, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stating that an attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian.
