Miami Seaquarium Faces Controversy After Dolphin Deaths
Full Transcript
Another dolphin has died at the now closed Miami Seaquarium, marking the second such incident in just three months. According to the Miami New Times, the Dolphin Company announced the death of Boomer, a ten-year-old bottlenose dolphin, who passed away on November 2.
Boomer had a documented history of health issues, including chronic appetite irregularities and recurring infections. He was brought to the Seaquarium in June from Dolphin Connection in the Florida Keys for closer supervision.
Despite treatment and supplemental nutrition, Boomer experienced weight loss in recent weeks. The company initially reported that his condition seemed to improve, with Boomer regaining weight and displaying normal behavior.
However, the ongoing challenges ultimately led to his death. This incident follows the death of another dolphin named Bimini, who died in September at the facility. Bimini, a 26-year-old dolphin, had suffered from severe health issues including broken ribs and breathing problems.
The report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed that Bimini ingested nails and bolts, indicating neglect and poor conditions at the facility. The Miami Seaquarium officially closed its doors on October 12 after Miami-Dade County terminated its lease due to a long history of violations.
The Dolphin Company filed for bankruptcy in March 2025, and a federal judge approved a $22.5 million sale of the county lease to developer David Martin, who plans to transform the site into a new entertainment complex.
In light of these dolphin deaths, animal rights group PETA has called for the immediate release of remaining animals at the Seaquarium. PETA President Tracy Reiman criticized the facility, stating that dolphins can live 40 years or longer in the wild and should not be kept in such conditions.
A necropsy is set to be performed on Boomer to determine the exact cause of death. The Dolphin Company expressed heartbreak over Boomer's passing, emphasizing their dedication to animal care and the lessons learned from these experiences.
