Burmese Python Captured in Miami-Dade Neighborhood
Full Transcript
A Burmese python was captured in a Miami-Dade neighborhood just days before Christmas after a resident spotted it hiding in an areca palm. Local snake wrangler Michael Ronquillo from Humane Iguana Control identified the snake on video and explained that it likely entered the residential area from nearby canals.
The python measured roughly six feet long and weighed about 30 pounds, raising concerns among residents about the potential danger to pets and children. Ronquillo noted that the snake's position in the palm tree made it particularly dangerous, as it could easily attack pets or humans.
He emphasized that python sightings in urban areas are becoming more common, with one to two removals each month. Ronquillo advised residents to avoid handling pythons themselves due to the risk of bites and suggested contacting trained professionals for safe removal.
He also mentioned the importance of humanely euthanizing invasive species like the Burmese python as stated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
