Cuban athletes Leyanis Perez and Julio Cesar La Cruz have been recognized as the most outstanding sports figures of 2025, according to a survey conducted by the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, or Inder.
Leyanis Perez earned this distinction after securing titles in both indoor and outdoor world athletics competitions and dominating the Diamond League for a second consecutive year, achieving multiple records above 14.90 meters.
Julio Cesar La Cruz, an experienced boxer, won a bronze medal at the World Boxing Championships and claimed the continental title from the World Boxing Association, marking his fifteenth national championship in Cuba.
Additionally, the best team award went to beach volleyball duo Jorge Luis Alayo and Noslen Diaz, highlighting the continued success of Cuban sports despite ongoing political and economic challenges in the country.
These achievements not only showcase individual talent but also reinforce the importance of sports in cultivating national pride and identity, even as athletes face significant obstacles. In contrast, Robertlandy Simon, another prominent athlete, is dealing with an uncertain future following a complex injury requiring surgery, which may prevent him from returning to play until 2026.
His situation underscores the challenges athletes face amidst the backdrop of Cuba's sports scene, which continues to thrive against adversity.
