According to a report from Gizmodo, this unusual requirement was disclosed during a company meeting where employees were informed that providing such data was a job requirement to support xAI's mission.

The Wall Street Journal further detailed that prior to this meeting, employees were asked to sign a form granting xAI a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to use their likenesses.
