Elon Musk's EU Controversy: Fines and Abolishment Calls
Full Transcript
Following a significant fine of 120 million euros, approximately 140 million dollars, imposed on X, formerly known as Twitter, by the European Union, Elon Musk expressed strong discontent. In reaction to the fine, Musk stated on his platform that the EU should be abolished, advocating for the return of sovereignty to individual countries.
Musk's remarks came after X's head of product, Nikita Bier, accused the European Commission of exploiting an advertising feature to enhance the reach of their announcement regarding the fine. Bier claimed that the Commission logged into a dormant ad account to post a misleading link, falsely presenting it as a video to artificially increase engagement.
In retaliation, X terminated the European Commission's ad account, although it remains obligated to address the concerns that led to the fine, including issues related to misleading verified accounts and transparency in advertising.
This incident marks the first fine under the EU's Digital Services Act, highlighting the ongoing tension between tech giants and regulatory bodies.
