Unusual Bronze Age Burial Site Discovered in Scotland
Full Transcript
A Bronze Age burial site has been uncovered at the Twentyshilling Wind Farm in Sanquhar, Scotland. Archaeologists, led by Thomas Muir of Guard Archaeology, discovered a pit containing five burial urns with the cremated remains of at least eight individuals.
The burial site has been dated to between 1439 and 1287 B.C. Muir suggests that the deceased may have been part of the same family or group, possibly linked by a shared fate such as famine or a catastrophic event.
The urns were found tightly packed within the pit, indicating they were deposited simultaneously during that period. Muir also referenced another Bronze Age site in the region where bodies were exposed prior to interment, suggesting a long-term communal use of burial spaces.
This find offers new insights into Bronze Age funerary practices and may reshape our understanding of social structures and rituals of the era. The details of this discovery are reported in Archaeology Magazine.
