The recent opening of two new Metro C stations in Rome, the Colosseo and Porta Metronia, has transformed public transport into a unique archaeological experience. According to the New York Times, these stations, part museum and part metro stop, showcase ancient artifacts discovered during excavation.

At the Colosseo station, commuters can view the remains of thermal baths damaged by the great fire of 64 A.D. and fragments of ancient stone wells. The Porta Metronia station features a military complex with barracks and a commander’s villa, offering a glimpse into imperial Rome.

Euronews highlights that the construction faced challenges due to the need to protect ruins beneath Via dei Fori Imperiali and manage groundwater. Despite these hurdles, the Metro C line, which has been under construction for nearly two decades, is expected to alleviate congestion in Rome while providing a daily insight into the city’s rich history, as noted by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri during the opening ceremony.
