800-Year-Old Sealskin Book Uncovered in Norway's Medieval Study

A rare medieval book, believed to be 800 years old, has been handed over to the National Library of Norway by a family that claims it originated from a monastery in western Norway. According to Science Norway, this historic book contains eight surviving pages featuring religious songs written in Latin.

The book is particularly significant as medieval texts are scarce in Norway due to the country's transition to Protestantism under Danish rule in 1537, which led to the destruction or repurposing of many Catholic manuscripts.

Conservator Chiara Palandri estimates the book was created in the thirteenth century, with its pages made of calfskin parchment. The cover, noted for its distinctive hairy sealskin, and a strap made from reindeer hide, indicate it was likely produced locally in Norway.

Aslaug Ommundsen from the University of Bergen emphasized the importance of this find, stating that we have few writings from this period, making such discoveries invaluable for understanding medieval culture and literature.

The report highlights that testing will be conducted to accurately date the materials, identify the seal species used for the cover, and trace the origins of the parchment.
