Chatbots have been found to significantly influence political opinions, despite concerns about their accuracy. A study conducted by the UK government's AI Security Institute, involving nearly 80,000 participants, revealed that while chatbots can sway opinions on issues such as public sector pay and inflation, they often deliver substantial amounts of inaccurate information.

The research concluded that the most persuasive AI models tended to be the least accurate, suggesting that optimizing for persuasion may compromise truthfulness. Additionally, a separate study from Cornell University found that AI chatbots could change voting preferences among participants, with one in 35 people shifting toward supporting Donald Trump and one in 21 toward Kamala Harris after engaging with specific chatbots.

This effect was notably larger than that of traditional political advertisements, indicating a potential new frontier for political campaigning. However, researchers cautioned that the chatbots' effectiveness in real-world settings may be limited by competing information demands and the necessity for prolonged interactions.

The persistent concern remains that these technologies could exacerbate misinformation and manipulate public opinion in unprecedented ways, raising critical ethical questions regarding AI's role in shaping political discourse.
