Scientists have issued a stark warning regarding synthetic chemicals in the food system, estimating a health burden of $2.2 trillion annually. This report highlights that chemicals such as phthalates, bisphenols, pesticides, and PFAS, known as 'forever chemicals,' are linked to increased rates of cancer, neurodevelopmental conditions, and infertility, while also harming global agriculture.

The financial impact includes an additional $640 billion in ecological costs, including agricultural losses and water safety standards for these chemicals. According to Philip Landrigan, a pediatrician from Boston College and co-author of the report, this issue of chemical pollution is as serious as climate change.

The report includes contributions from several organizations, including the Institute of Preventive Health and the Center for Environmental Health, indicating widespread concern over chemical exposure.

With over 350,000 synthetic chemicals on the market today, the authors emphasize the need for urgent regulatory action to address this escalating health crisis.
