Elon Musk highlighted SpaceX's policy of providing free Starlink service during natural disasters, emphasizing the company's commitment to humanitarian aid over profit. This announcement came in the wake of severe flooding in Indonesia's Sumatra region and Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka, where Starlink is offering free service to both new and existing customers through December 2025.

By partnering with the Indonesian government, Starlink is rapidly deploying terminals to restore connectivity in the hardest-hit areas, while also coordinating with Sri Lankan authorities to provide additional support amidst the cyclone's aftermath.

Musk tweeted, "SpaceX's standard policy is to make Starlink free whenever there is a natural disaster somewhere in the world. It would not be right to profit from misfortune." Starlink's humanitarian initiatives underscore the role of private space companies in aiding disaster recovery efforts.

In the past, Starlink has been deployed during the 2023 Maui wildfires, Hurricane Helene in North Carolina in 2024, and floods in Texas, facilitating emergency coordination and support.
