The European Space Agency is testing innovative food production methods to support astronauts on long-duration missions. According to Space.com, the initiative involves a protein called Solein, developed by Finnish company Solar Foods, which could transform how food is produced in space.

Current practices involve transporting food from Earth to the International Space Station, which is impractical for missions to the Moon or Mars. Project HOBI-WAN, part of ESA's Terrae Novae Exploration Programme, aims to develop a sustainable food source using minimal resources.

Angelique Van Ombergen, ESA's chief exploration scientist, emphasized the need for innovative solutions to ensure astronaut well-being and mission success on extended journeys. Solein is produced from microbes, air, and electricity through a gas fermentation process.

While the technology has been demonstrated on Earth, adaptations are required for space conditions. Notably, ammonia, typically used for nitrogen in protein synthesis on Earth, will be replaced with urea from astronaut urine in space.

Solar Foods will collaborate with OHB System AG over the next eight months to refine the technology for space application. The goal is to confirm whether the organism can grow in space as effectively as it does on Earth and to develop gas fermentation technology for use in microgravity.

Arttu Luukanen, senior vice president of space and defense at Solar Foods, stated that this marks a historic first for humanity. If successful, Solein production will then be tested aboard the ISS, potentially revolutionizing astronaut sustenance during long missions.

This research is crucial to enhancing autonomy and resilience for future space exploration endeavors, as noted by ESA. The implications of this project could pave the way for sustainable living in space, addressing one of the major challenges facing human exploration beyond Earth.
