China has made significant strides in space manufacturing with its recent advancement in inflatable module technology. This breakthrough involves a smart morphing framework that can be compactly folded during launch and then inflated and unfolded once in orbit.

According to the South China Morning Post, these inflatable modules are designed to form vast, stable operational habitats, which can serve as building blocks for a manufacturing plant in space. Director Yang Yiqiang from the Institute of Mechanics Sky Flight Science and Technology Centre highlights that this technology is a leap from concept verification to engineering realization, enabling direct manufacturing and production in the space environment.

This development signifies a new chapter for China as it joins the United States and other nations in the burgeoning field of space industrialization. In 2023, California-based Varda Space Industries announced the deployment of its first satellite, which it claims is the world’s first space factory.

The report indicates that Chinese developers aim to utilize the platform for producing biopharmaceuticals, 3D-printed products, and new materials in space. The recent successful test of a key module known as the reconfigurable flexible in-orbit manufacturing platform was conducted in collaboration with several domestic research bodies, further solidifying China’s capability in this arena.

This advancement not only enhances China’s position in space manufacturing but also has the potential to revolutionize how large-scale structures are built in orbit, significantly impacting future space missions and resource utilization.

As space factories continue to emerge as a new frontier for both public and private sectors, China’s inflatable module technology is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of space industry.
