Danish public health officials have reported two separate Salmonella outbreaks affecting 48 individuals across the country. According to Food Safety News, the Statens Serum Institut has documented 18 cases of Salmonella Strathcona since early November.

The patients, ranging in age from 5 to 85 with a median age of 51, are distributed nationwide, with the highest number in Syddanmark. This strain has been present in the EU for over a decade and was previously linked to tomatoes from Sicily.

Meanwhile, a second outbreak involving Salmonella Typhimurium has resulted in 30 cases, with patients aged 7 to 84 and a median age of 27. The source of this outbreak has not yet been identified. Both outbreaks are under investigation by SSI, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, and the National Food Institute.

Whole genome sequencing of the bacteria indicates a close genetic relationship among the isolates, suggesting a common source of infection. The ECDC has noted an EU-wide implication, with cases also reported in Canada and the United States, highlighting the need for increased awareness and preventive measures in food safety.
