Ethiopia has confirmed an outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus, with nine cases reported in the southern region of the country. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that the Marburg virus, similar to Ebola, causes severe symptoms including bleeding, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, and has a high fatality rate ranging from twenty-five to eighty percent.

The World Health Organization’s director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced the detection of these cases just two days after the Africa CDC was alerted to a suspected hemorrhagic virus in the area.

The National Reference Laboratory in Ethiopia confirmed the presence of Marburg virus disease. Epidemiological investigations and laboratory analyses are ongoing, with initial findings suggesting the virus strain is similar to those previously identified in East Africa.

The swift response from Ethiopian health authorities aims to contain the outbreak in the Jinka area, and the Africa CDC is collaborating with local officials to manage the situation and prevent further spread into other parts of East Africa.

This outbreak follows a recent epidemic in Tanzania, which resulted in ten deaths before it was contained earlier this year. Rwanda also faced its first known Marburg epidemic last December, leading to fifteen fatalities, but successfully managed to eradicate it.

Currently, there are no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments for the Marburg virus; however, rehydration and treatment of specific symptoms can improve survival rates. Last year, Rwanda conducted trials of an experimental vaccine developed by the US-based Sabin Vaccine Institute.

This outbreak of the Marburg virus in Ethiopia poses a serious public health challenge, necessitating immediate and coordinated responses from both national and international health organizations.
