D.C. National Guard Shooting Incident Sparks National Discussion on Safety

On Wednesday, November 22, 2024, at approximately 4 PM, two members of the D.C. National Guard were shot while on patrol near 17th and I streets in Northwest Washington, D.C. Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20, and Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, aged 24, were targeted by a gunman wielding a Smith & Wesson .357-caliber revolver.

Tragically, Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries later that evening, surrounded by her parents, while Wolfe remains in critical condition following surgery. President Donald Trump addressed the incident via video call from Mar-a-Lago, describing Beckstrom as an 'incredible person' and indicating plans to deploy an additional 500 troops to D.C.

The Joint Task Force-D.C. is currently evaluating appropriate honors for Beckstrom, which may include a posthumous promotion and military burial. The attack has led to calls for improved safety measures for National Guard members in the city's streets.
