Tragic Death of Siena Lacrosse Coach Highlights Brain Injury Risks

Liam Gleason, the head coach of the Siena men's lacrosse team, tragically passed away at the age of 41 due to a traumatic brain injury he sustained from a fall at his home. According to ESPN, the incident occurred just three days prior to his death, which was announced by the school on Wednesday.

Gleason had recently led the Saints to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament during his seventh season at Siena. The profound loss is felt deeply within the community, with Siena president Chuck Seifert expressing that Gleason's death is a 'sudden, senseless loss' that carries a pain beyond understanding.

Seifert emphasized that Gleason was 'universally loved and admired' and that the community was blessed by his life. Gleason is survived by his wife and three children, and a fundraising effort has been initiated to support the family's needs moving forward.

ESPN reported that dozens of individuals, including players from Siena, school officials, and members of the University at Albany athletic community, gathered to honor Gleason as he was wheeled into surgery to donate some of his organs.

His funeral is scheduled for Saturday at the UHY Center on Siena's campus. Gleason was a notable player at Albany, one of Siena's rivals, and began his coaching career as an assistant at Siena before returning as head coach in 2018 after stints at Albany.
