School Incident Raises Concerns Over Emergency Response Protocols

A southwest Houston mother, Kahtoyha Barnes, expressed outrage after her eight-year-old daughter, Kyrie Randall, suffered an asthma attack on the playground at KIPP Mosaic and the school staff did not call 911.
Kyrie recalled the incident stating, 'I took a breath, and then that was my last breath, and then I just took to my knees, and I fell.' Barnes was informed by school staff that Kyrie was in and out of consciousness but was not taken to the hospital until after her mother called her own mother to report the emergency.
School officials later stated that EMS responded and provided care but did not clarify whether any school employees had called them. Barnes claims that a medical plan for Kyrie, which had been in place since she enrolled, was not followed, and she is demanding accountability and potential criminal charges.
Kyrie was taken to the hospital, released with a heart monitor, which she now wears daily. KIPP Texas emphasized that student safety is their top priority and acknowledged the incident but provided no further details due to privacy laws.
