Nick Reiner, charged with the double murder of his parents, Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has a defense strategy that may heavily rely on his mental health issues. Reports indicate that the 32-year-old was diagnosed with schizophrenia and experienced a significant medication change just weeks prior to the tragic events.

Sources suggest that this medication adjustment, intended to stabilize him, had the opposite effect, leading to alarming and erratic behavior. Nick Reiner had a history of addiction, having cycled through 17 rehab stints since age 15, and was recently treated at a high-end Los Angeles mental health and substance abuse facility.

His mental state reportedly deteriorated rapidly in the month leading up to the murders. The incident allegedly occurred on a Sunday morning after a public altercation between Nick and his father at a Christmas party hosted by comedian Conan O'Brien.

Rob Reiner's body was discovered later that afternoon by his daughter, Romy, and Nick Reiner was arrested that evening at a gas station approximately 15 miles from the crime scene. Currently, Nick Reiner is held in solitary confinement at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles, placed on suicide watch and required to wear an anti-suicide smock.

He has restricted communication, only able to speak with his attorneys and jail personnel. Nick Reiner waived his right to a speedy arraignment and is scheduled to return to court on January 7 for arraignment.
