AI technology is leading to an increase in the hiring of radiologists rather than their replacement, according to a report by John Burn-Murdoch and Sarah O'Connor in the Financial Times. Healthcare systems around the world are employing more radiologists because AI tools enhance their workflows, create new oversight tasks, and increase imaging volumes.

Amaka Offiah, a consultant pediatric radiologist and professor at the University of Sheffield in the UK, states that 'AI will assist radiologists, but will not replace them. I could even dare to say: will never replace them.' The report highlights concerns from Offiah and the Royal College of Radiologists about a potential shortage of radiologists due to an aging population and rising demand for various imaging services.

John Burn-Murdoch concludes that even if AI can perform high-value tasks, displacement of radiologists is not inevitable, reminding us that the story of radiologists serves as a caution against making sweeping predictions about professions without a deep understanding of the field.

Sarah O'Connor adds that if training for radiologists had ceased in 2016, the current situation would be problematic.
