AI Chatbots Raise Concerns Over Child Safety
Full Transcript
Recent reports highlight serious safety concerns regarding AI chatbots for children. According to CBS News, one study of Character AI, an app allowing interactions with AI-generated chatbots, found that harmful content appeared 'about every five minutes' during a six-week investigation by Parents Together, a nonprofit focused on family safety.
This included suggestions of violence, self-harm, and sexual exploitation. Dr. Mitch Prinstein from the University of North Carolina noted that children's developing brains are particularly vulnerable to the influence of these chatbots, which often engage users in a way that affirms their thoughts rather than providing necessary challenge or corrective feedback.
In response to these concerns, Character AI announced new safety measures that include directing distressed users to resources and limiting interactions for users under 18. However, experts argue that more is needed to prioritize child well-being over data extraction from young users.
