A large fire broke out at the Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, on Monday night, October 16, 2023. The fire, which was reported just before 9:30 PM, was a two-alarm incident, prompting a response from approximately 50 firefighters.

Smoke was visible from miles away as the fire engulfed the rooftop of the 500-thousand square foot building located at 500 S. Salisbury Street. Witnesses described the scene with one individual stating, 'I see smoke engulfing like the entire building, like coming from the top of it.' Firefighters utilized cranes to battle the flames from above.

According to City of Raleigh spokesperson Julia Milstead, the fire has been extinguished, and fortunately, there was no interior damage reported. However, white smoke continued to rise from the roof past 11 PM.

Preliminary investigations suggested the fire was likely caused by a 'natural gas incident' connected to the HVAC system. Authorities eventually shut off the gas supply to eliminate any further hazards.

Fire investigators are focusing on a mechanical platform located on the roof to determine the fire's exact cause. At the time of the incident, there were no scheduled events at the convention center, but around a dozen security personnel and staff were present, all of whom were evacuated safely, with no injuries reported.

Milstead remarked, 'That's the best news.' The surrounding streets were blocked off to traffic, and drivers were advised to avoid the area as firefighters rotated in throughout the night to ensure the fire did not rekindle.

This incident highlights the challenges of emergency response in urban settings and the critical role of fire services in managing such emergencies effectively. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
