Full Transcript
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is moving forward with plans for a new middle school in Huntersville, expected to open in August 2028. This initiative aims to address overcrowding in the rapidly growing northern Mecklenburg County.
Dr. Charlitta Hatch, the District 1 representative on the CMS Board of Education, highlighted that the project is funded through the $2.5 billion CMS bond approved by voters in 2023. The new school will feature approximately 54 classrooms and is anticipated to accommodate about 1,100 students in the 2028-2029 academic year, relieving overcrowding at Bailey Middle School, Davidson K-8, and J.M.
Alexander Middle School. Safety considerations are a priority in the design process, with features aimed at enhancing security, such as reducing multiple entry points. Additionally, CMS plans to replace the current Huntersville Elementary School with a new 45-classroom facility, as the existing structure is over capacity and has layout challenges.
Improvements are also slated for North Mecklenburg High School as part of the bond-funded projects, according to WCNC Charlotte.
