Nevada Lawmakers Prepare for Special Session Amid Ongoing Issues

A special session of the Nevada Legislature could begin as soon as Thursday, according to Assemblyman Reuben D'Silva, a Democrat representing parts of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas. D'Silva indicated that discussions have been underway since Governor Joe Lombardo announced the special session last month.

The governor did not specify an exact date or the agenda for the session. However, D'Silva mentioned that public safety issues are expected to be prioritized, particularly e-scooter safety. The Las Vegas Valley has seen an increase in fatal crashes involving e-scooter riders and other personal transport devices.

D'Silva has expressed hope that regulations addressing e-scooter safety will be included in the agenda. He recently communicated his recommendations for e-scooter regulations to Lombardo's chief of staff, emphasizing the need for local control over safety measures.

The main focus of the upcoming special session will likely revolve around public safety, as D'Silva noted. Other topics may include the potential expansion of Nevada's film tax credit program, aimed at supporting the development of a film studio in Summerlin, which received initial support in previous legislative sessions.

Additionally, cybersecurity issues are also expected to be part of the conversation, given recent ransomware attacks that disrupted state services. Governor Lombardo's office has not yet responded to requests for further details regarding the session.
