Nevada Lawmakers Prepare for Special Session

A special session of the Nevada Legislature could commence as soon as Thursday, November 13, according to Assemblyman Reuben D'Silva, a Democrat from North Las Vegas. D'Silva reported that lawmakers were informed of this potential start date, following an announcement from Governor Joe Lombardo last month.

The governor had previously indicated that the session would focus on unfinished legislative business. Public safety issues are expected to take precedence during the session, with D'Silva advocating for e-scooter safety regulations in light of recent fatal accidents involving personal travel devices in the Las Vegas Valley.

He expressed hopes that the session would address these concerns, stating, 'This has become a very serious problem in the minds of a lot of Nevadans.' D'Silva has communicated his regulatory proposals regarding e-scooters to the governor's chief of staff.

The assemblyman emphasized that the primary objective of the special session is public safety, despite discussions of other topics such as the expansion of Nevada's film tax credit program and cybersecurity measures.

In June, proposals related to film tax credits aimed at supporting a new Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. studio campus in Summerlin were halted. Additionally, Governor Lombardo identified cybersecurity as a critical agenda item, referencing a recent ransomware attack that disrupted state services, including DMV operations.

As the special session approaches, lawmakers must remain prepared, with the governor holding the authority to determine the agenda and call to order for the session. The blackout period for campaign fundraising will also be in effect, limiting such activities for 15 days before and after the session.

The session's focus on urgent public safety matters, particularly regarding e-scooters, highlights the growing concerns among residents about safety on the roads in the Las Vegas area. This legislative gathering could lead to significant changes in regulations that affect the local community and its visitors, as lawmakers aim to tackle pressing issues that were left unresolved during the regular legislative session earlier this year.
