On November 2, 2025, Wesley Ervin Sterner, a 77-year-old cyclist and retired Air Force sergeant, was killed by a suspected impaired driver in the northwest valley.

The driver, identified as 69-year-old Charles Carter, has been charged with felony DUI resulting in death and reckless driving resulting in death, highlighting the dangers posed by impaired driving on local roads.

In response to Sterner's tragic death, Ghost Bikes Las Vegas organized a memorial ceremony on November 25, 2025, placing a ghost bike at the crash site to raise awareness of cycling safety. Attendees gathered to honor Sterner, sharing messages of love and remembrance, with many reflecting on his passion for cycling and the impact he had on his community.

Linda Sterner, Wesley's widow, expressed her grief, describing the moment she found her husband at the crash site, stating, "I saw him laying there, with his crippled bike, and my world stopped." This incident is the third cycling-related death in Las Vegas this year, revealing a troubling trend in traffic safety.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police Department is also facing scrutiny following an officer-involved shooting on November 23, 2025, where officers mistook a suspect's vape pen for a knife. The suspect, Wade Griffith, was shot by Officer Patrick Natali after allegedly attempting to carjack a vehicle.

Griffith, who has a history of criminal activity and mental health issues, was reported to have been holding a vape pen when officers confronted him, leading to the shooting. This shooting marks the fifth incident involving Metro officers this year, raising concerns about police use of force in the community.
