High-Stakes Gambling Lawsuit Revives Scrutiny of Resorts World Las Vegas

A civil RICO lawsuit filed against Resorts World Las Vegas has intensified scrutiny of the casino's operations. High-stakes gambler Robert R.J. Cipriani and investor James Russell allege that the casino and its parent company, Genting Berhad, engaged in racketeering activities during the venue's initial year.
The lawsuit, a 95-page complaint, names several defendants, including former chairman KT Lim and former president Scott Sibella. Cipriani claims he alerted staff about suspicious activities involving convicted fraudster Brandon Sattler, only to face retaliation, including a dismissal of a subsequent arrest.
The complaint further alleges that investments tied to known criminals were hidden, contributing to significant losses for Russell, who claims Sattler was able to wager millions without proper scrutiny, raising questions about anti-money laundering protocols.
In March, the Nevada Gaming Control Board fined Resorts World $10.5 million for similar failures, indicating regulatory concerns about the casino's practices. Despite vehement denials from Resorts World, the lawsuit could have broader implications for gambling regulations and the reputation of Las Vegas as a gaming destination.
