Clark County School District Enhances Student Safety Measures
Full Transcript
The Clark County School District received a $10,000 grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety to enhance student safety measures aimed at reducing the number of students injured by vehicles. This initiative comes in response to alarming statistics, with over 180 students struck by vehicles since the beginning of the school year, resulting in four fatalities.
The tragic incidents include the deaths of two 12-year-old students, Cristofer Suarez and Haylee Ryan, killed in separate crashes near school zones last month. Additionally, 12-year-old Jovonn Magee-Thomas was killed while riding an electric scooter, and 16-year-old Reynaldo Martinez de la Sanchez died after being hit by a vehicle while riding a moped, all within a short timeframe.
The grant will fund the Joining Forces school zone traffic safety campaign, which is designed to increase law enforcement visibility and public awareness about unsafe driving behaviors. Clark County School District Police officers will conduct targeted overtime enforcement in areas where distraction, speeding, and impaired driving contribute to serious accidents.
This initiative aims to educate drivers and prevent future tragedies by enhancing safety protocols around school zones. The report emphasizes that speeding and distracted driving are the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes on Nevada's roadways.
The proactive measures taken by the Clark County School District highlight the urgent need to protect students as they travel to and from school.
